Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center
The Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center (Georgetown County, SC) is a property gifted to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and supported by the Yawkey Foundation. The Center provides valuable habitat for the threatened and endangered species such as Loggerhead Sea Turtle and the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker, as well as American alligators and other reptiles, hundreds of migratory and resident bird species including waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors, and several mammal species.
The Center has experienced little infrastructure development over the last 100 years and is closed both to hunting and to the public (excluding tours by reservation only), so resident wildlife are shielded from human pressures commonly seen on other southeastern islands. Despite being the site of many research projects over the years, including the world's longest American alligator study, this is the first in-depth bobcat study on the island!
The Center comprises of three islands: North Island, South Island (both barrier islands), and Cat Island. South Island was chosen as a second study site for Project Goals 3 & 4 (see: Clemson Project) due to the similar size and habitat characteristics to Kiawah Island. By comparing bobcats at Kiawah Island to those on South Island, we will be able to identify differences in movement, habitat selection, and diet that may stem from differences in human activity levels and anticoagulant rodenticide exposure. We will mimic the methods used in Kiawah Island's Bobcat Project to monitor this reference site.
Please visit the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center website for more information and to schedule a tour!
